How Can I Know God?

In the Bible, we find scripture that tells how we can know God.

1. God loves you and wants you to experience peace and an abundant, eternal life with Him.
God created people in His own image (Genesis 1:27) and desires a relationship with each of us forever. God wants us to enjoy an abundant life.

The Bible tells us...

"We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."
(Romans 5:1).

"God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life."
(John 3:16)

"[Jesus] came that they might have life and might have it abundantly." (John 10:10).

2. Unfortunately each of us is separated from God.
God didn't create us to be robots that obey Him automatically.  Instead He gave us a will and the freedom to choose.   We often choose to disobey God.  This side of our nature is called sin, and it separates us from God.

The Bible says...

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23).

"Your sins have cut you off from God." (Isaiah 59:2).

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23).

3. God's only provision to bridge this gap is Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is the only answer to this separation. He died on a cross and rose from the grave to pay the penalty for our sin and to bridge the gap between us and God.  Nothing else can remedy this gap - we can't do enough good, give enough money, attend enough church services, or sacrifice enough of our time or selves.  God wants to forgive us because He loves us, but He can't tolerate sin.

Jesus said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me." (John 14:6).

"For Christ also has suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God." (1 Peter 3:18a).

(see next column)

"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8).

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9)

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9).

4. Each must trust Jesus Christ.
To enter into a relationship with God and experience His peace in your life, you need to ask Jesus Christ to come into your heart to become your Savior and Lord.

The Bible says ...

"If you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:9).

"But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name." (John 1:12).

"All the prophets testify about Him [Jesus Christ] that every one who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."  (Acts 10:43).

If you desire to know God or you are not certain whether you have this relationship, we encourage you to settle this issue by praying this simple prayer.

Dear Father God, I know that I am separated from You because of my sin, and I need you to forgive me. Thank You for sending your only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for my sins. I want to turn from my sins. I invite Jesus Christ to come into my heart and life as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for the gift of salvation and eternal life.  I pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
